Micro Credit Union WAWATA, at Mawela, Kilimanjaro Tanzania

Over 350 women are members of the WAWATA (Catholic Women of Tanzania) Mawela. It is a Union that brings together women of Mawela Parish and its surrounding villages. Members pay a minimum fee every month. They run various profitable projects including a stationery and banquet organizing business. Members with clear business projects can borrow from the capital at an agreed interest.

You Touch Africa assisted with a grant which they lent to each other. Through the collected interest they funded local projects, including feeding the poor and supporting poor children with their school fees. Once they spent the equivalent of the grant, they kept the capital for themselves.
